"The Monster" a poem by a young person called Zena Alexandra Nicolaou about her Mothers MS

    THE MONSTER

Sclerosis! From the greek word 'skleros' meaning hard,
Scars are born and develop around the nerves.
The body gives up, like a solid piece of ice...melting.
A relapse will then catch you off guard.

Harsh times you will suffer, wanting to be like another,
Drawn to a bed of pain, three quarters of the day.
Unable to move, yet wanting to,
As you question, when will you be ok?

You've still got so much to give,
Yet it's not over for you, and it never will.
Incurable as ever, it'll be there forever,
As you sit knowing you've too much pride to admit you're ill.

The many different regions are the 'Multiple'
The central nervous system relentlessly traumatised and unbalanced.
You may have damaged myelin, sitting there reminiscing,
About your cousins wedding..that day you danced.

The monster will always lie awaiting you,
Sucking in your strength and slurring your speech.
The monster lurks in dark confusion
As you tighten your eyes wishing to awake out of its reach.

Shedding as many as you can,
Till the tears have been wept.
Alas you rest all the hours of the day,
    Until all sleep is slept.

A prisoner in your own body you will remain,
Loving yourself for yourself, for there is no more fun.
As it eats away at your body you scream, for this pain to go away,
Tears splash down your cheeks as your body tingles, the pins and needles have now begun.

Everay morning, noon, and night you'll remember and know,
When you sleep you'll remember and know.
And when you wake, you'll remember and know,
That Multiple Sclerosis will follow you wherever you go.

    I love you MuM...

Hi, My name is Jenny Harrod and this is my "AutoBlography" No, I'm no-one special and my story is by no means unique. I'm not ever going to be famous or rich, nor a great explorer or inventor. I'm just another face in the crowd - my only outstanding features being my height at six foot one and a half (or five foot thirteen and a half as I used to say with a smile to elderly patients), the fact I have Multiple Sclerosis, I was unable to have children (life sucks!) and I had to take ill health retirement following a back injury just as I'd qualified as a District Nursing Sister - Family or career? someone somewhere didn't want me to have either!

I have not lived a particularly exciting life (yet!!) but if one person finds a little comfort or inspiration here then it has been worth it.

    Enjoy your visit.
